The ever-rising human cost of coal

In China, at least 40 are dead in three separate coal mine accidents in Gansu, Liaoning, and Henan provinces. This comes less than a month after an explosion killed 46 coal workers in Henan province.

Meanwhile stateside, the Upper Big Branch mine- which saw the worst US coal disaster in since 1984 with 29 dead- is being investigated in a federal criminal probe. It’s being reported that methane detectors were bypassed on the dig at least once (though so far this hasn’t been tied directly to the blast).
