Today kicks off the World Science Festival in NYC. It’s running through June 1st, and tickets are still available. I have to say that at first glance the diversity of events is impressive, and although some (the “science” behind the Bourne Identity?) may not seem to have as much meat as others, overall it looks to be quite an enjoyable experience. [As an aside- I’ve overheard more than one person express a bit of surprise at Alan Alda’s involvement, but as some of you may know Alan has long displayed a passion for bringing science to the public.]
Encourage your friends and family nearby to go, especially those with children both interested in science and indifferent. Events like this are desperately needed in a time where scientific ignorance and outright denial (e.g. evolution, AIDS, climate change, and on and on) seem to be coming ever more commonplace. If you can’t attend, you can still show your support by making a donation.
UPDATE: Here’s a clip from last night’s Colbert Report where guest Brian Greene briefly talks about the festival.
